Default Question on Installing SATA drive

    Hi

My first build and I’m about to install my new Sata 11 drive but need a few issues clearing up.

Reading the manual it says thet if I require raid functions operable I need to make a diskette.
I don’t so that part is quite clear.

Turning the page it then says if I run the drive in IDE mode then I don’t need do make a diskette.

If I decide I want to operate the drive in SATA 11 mode then I do have to make a diskette.

Basically I want to know if the second diskette is actually one and the same as the first diskette which would have been required for the raid functions?

Why would I want to run my SATA 11 drive in IDE mode anyway? Are there any benefits?

If it helps I can add theft eventually I want to use an old IDE from my old system as storage.
I assume, for this, I have to set the jumpers to slave as usual.

    Thanks……KTM

    Hi,

I install SATA drives on a pretty much daily basis and have never used a diskette.

If your using the SATA as your new boot drive then basically all you have to do is connect it up, and maybe just have a quite check of your motherboard Bios for any SATA configuration as some motherboards have SATA raid on them as well.

If your not sure you can give us your motherboard make and model and we can check this for you..

But generally you just plug it in and go, no need for any diskettes

    thanks

    Hi Tech-Master

    Thanks for your prompt response.

If it helps my motherboard is an Asrock 939 Dual-Vsta Sata 11.

Anything else you can add will be most welcome.

    Thanks.....kevmac

    Hi,

Ok i just realised that as your using a SATA II drive there is slighty different installation method.

First thing to do is check your HDD jumpter settings and make sure they are for SATA II mode, the drive user manual should tell you how this is done.

Connect the SATA Drive to the JMicron SATA port on the motherboard then following the steps on page 26 of your motherboard manual, section 2.15
