    Default Partition Problem

Just put together a computer and all in general seems to be OK despite a few initial problems.

I decided to partition my hard-drive using Partition magic and then copyied to each partition using Drive Image 7. However, I did this at various stages because I wanted each partition for different activities.

Strangely, when I swap from one partition to another they all have exactly the same data and software written to it.
Almost as if they are all operating to the Mirrored Raid Option but my BIOS is switched to non-raid.
With a little test I wrote a sentence in Microsoft Word on partition 3 saved: went to partition 1 and there it was in Documents.

Don't know if it's a setting on the BIOS causing this or in the software.

    Hi,

Can you give us a bit more info about your partitions and what is on each one, for example partion 1 has xp, partion 2 has ??? and so on..

It sounds a bit of a odd one

    Hi Zorro

I find it a little odd myself. I always thought that partitions were a little like building brick walls acrooss the hard-drive.

Basically I'm putting win2k on the first three partitions and for the time being using the
rest as an extended partition until I put in a second hard drive.

As I said I placed basic drivers and software on partition one and then used Drive image to copy that to the two other primary partitions.

I was then going to use that as a foundation to build each partition with different software for different purposes.

Do you think it's possible that even though it's telling me it's changed partitions it has in fact remained on the same one.

    Thanks for your time ......kevmac

Right ok, lets see if im following you.

So you have 3 partitons lets call them C: D: & E: , you then installed windows 2k on partition C: then used drive image copy the OS from C: to D: & E?

And you can now boot of any partition?

What may be the problem is because its a copy of C: that the OS on D: still points to the folders on C: for example your my documents folder even though you are booting off D: its still has the path for the my documents folder to the C: drive because that was the original setting..

is that the problem... if you follow me , its a bit confusing

    Hi again,

I think I see what you are getting at but I thought partitions were impermeable.
I've had another look and noticed that through Partition Magic you are allowed to browse the contents on each partition.
Through that I can see that the contents on the other two partitions are as they should be so I think although PQboot suggests I've booted to the requested partition I don't think I have and despite what PQboot says I'm always on C.

Going back to your suggestion there was a little add on piece of software that had something do do about changing drive letters and associated files but I wasn't that sure how it worked.. Maybe I ought to dive back into the 'Help Files' and find out more about that.

    Thanks again.................K
