Default Booting up a new computer

I am building a new computer and was also wondering if I will be able to start it up for the first time with a brand new hard drive that has nothing on it. I haven't gotten the hdd yet but it will be a sata drive and I have never dealt with them before so I wanted to find out ahead of time.
