Default Is it necessary to have a floppy drive installed on a new system?

The computer I am currently using has a floppy drive that doesn't work and shows up as failing on startup. I am building a new system and wonder: do I absolutely need a floppy? I am guessing not I don't use one and don't plan to buy one.

There's no need for a floppy, I'd rather have a card reader, but this makes some good reading http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1...104,00.htm?r=2 .
