MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
They call it the "Skype killer." Anyone heard of it?
http://www.magicjack.com/site/index.html
This is supposed to be US$19.00 per year after the first year, for free local and long distance phone calls (VOIP); plug in any analog jack phone and voila! I wonder if anyone has tried it yet?

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
Sounds good but only if you are in the USA or Canada do you get free calls.
I currently use SKYPE and make regular calls between Scotland and Australia for free. I must admit I hated SKYPE with a mic and headphones so bought a VOIP Telephone which look like a regular phone and make most call via that now even to none SKYPE numbers at very reasonable rates.
MagicJack may be a SKYPE Killer in America .. But there are a couple of other Islands outside of the US shores ... that will still stick with SKYPE

Actually, I'm a little confused about that. It appears that if you sign up for a "US exchange" anyone can call you(?) I don't know - they just don't have enough FAQs on their site, and no one was around for me to ask when I was there. Well, it's something to keep an eye on...but, until they get some privacy/security on VoIP, I think I'll stick to my old regular cordless telephone from the local telephone company! [hehe]

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
Just like 4od, the new BBCi player and Sky anytime, Skype uses some of your bandwidth. Whether it uses the kservice .exe or not I don't know only that it's a peer to peer system. I got rid of 4od as soon as I realised what is going on. From Google about skype bandwidth usage, http://tinyurl.com/ypnk57 .
I'll be sticking to my BT cordless unless they can run without p2p systems.

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
Bandwidth is not really a problem for me with Virgin Media broadband. Admittedly I don`t have SKYPE running all day, I only switch it on at hours that I know someone may contact me (my contacts list is quite small, don`t want to talk to every Thom, **** & Harry on it

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
Hello Ferret. Good to hear. I feel a bit sorry for those on a capped bandwidth especially if they don't know of these usages.

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
With the amount of people now on the Internet and with a broadband connection, it is about time ISP`s stopped this capped connections. If one provider can do it, so can the rest
Internet usage is changing rapidly these days with Computer telephones, music downloads & Movie downloads. A capped connection just is not suitable for most peoples needs

Re: MagicJack the Skype & Vonage killer
Do you mean Skype?
If so then yes you just need to buy a Skype Phone (you can get one for about £10 in Tesco)
Download Skype (free)
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/
Create an account free (although you can transfer sme cash with Paypal to allow you to use the Skype phone to phone ordinary landlines)
Then you can talk free to anyone with a Skype accout for Free.
I stay just outside Glasgow and have free calls to my sister in Australia, Plus you can set skype up to work with a webcam and see pictures at the same time.

I have talked to a few people who have magicjack now - the sound is kind of bad - canned and/or garbled. Not sure if it was their connection speed or what.
