Thread: iPod anyone?

Anyone have any experience with iPods? I am going to do a reformat/reinstall for someone and before I do, I have to deal with iTunes. But, I can't seem to get the iPod to work. I updated the iTunes software, which then told me I needed to update the iPod software. After completing that task, I was instructed to plug the iPod into the wall. Well, I have done that now, for about 10 hours and I can't get iPod to do anything! I get the apple logo to show up, then sometimes I get a battery with an exclamation point, then most of the time I get the icon that tells me I need to plug it into the wall. Apple's site is horrid; I can't get anywhere over there.

Just thought I'd ask...I always get such great help here!

I assume that when you are told to plug it into the wall ... it is plugging it into a charging unit .. to charge the Ipod?

Having it plugged into the usb port on the computer does the same thing (Charges the Ipod)

When the ipod is plugged into the computer and Itunes opened, does it recognise the Ipod .. it should automatically upload anything in Itunes to the Ipod.

If the ipod is not holding a charge it is possibe the battery is damaged and needs replacing.

Itunes ****s ... it is painfully slow to work with .. there are alternatives you can use for uploading music on the Ipod but they don`t work for video.

Stupid question but do you know which ipod it is ... there a lot of different ones.
I have the Ipod Nano 3rd generation 8 gig. Instruction for other versions of the ipod may be slightly different (don`t know can only afford one

Hey Ferret! Listen, here's what happened:

Old iPod - hasn't been used in probably a year or more. iPod Mini 2nd generation, model M9436LL. The computer hasn't been used for at least a year so the iPod has been idle even longer.

Have a messed up W2K Dell I'm upgrading the HDD, formatting & reinstalling for a friend; iTunes & iPod involved. Before removing the old HDD, I plugged in the iPod the first time, and the system recognized it. At one point it showed the battery charging and then with an exclamation point on it. I updated to the latest version of iTunes for W2k (to facilitate moving the music files and deauthorizing the system). Then it automatically told me that there was an update for the iPod and would I like to install it - well of course, I did. Once the update was finished, the update program told me to plug the iPod into a wall outlet. (I assume this is to burn in the update?) Well, I had to drive 12 miles to a friend's house to get a wall charger....while I was going there, the iPod started showing a picture of a wall charger plugging into the wall. I got to my friend's house, plugged in the iPod and it set for almost 3 hours. Still, the picture of the wall plug was on it. I couldn't turn it on - I just got the apple logo and then the wall charger picture. I took it home and plugged it in overnight. Same thing this morning. I tried plugging it into the computer - no change. I'm wondering if the battery was going and the update killed it? Or, maybe there is something more wrong? or, the update fried the thing? I'm lost and I feel bad - I hope I didn't fry this thing by updating it. I have tried resetting it a million times. I've tried plugging it into a WinXP computer without iTunes, but it doesn't recognize it - not even as a disk.

I've tried looking on the apple web site - it's really lousey! There's no forum, no tech support email, no nothing. I tell you, knowing what I know now, I would NEVER buy one of these things. I even saw that if you send your iPod in for a battery change, they send you someone else's iPod back! How lame is that? I'll stick to my cheap $20. no-brand throw away one thank you........LOL

So, any thoughts?

If the Ipod has been lying doing nothing for a year, I wouldn`t be surprised if the battery has gone Kaput. ( It might even have developed a leak).

You can buy a battery and put it in yourself (the warrenty will be up now anyway so no harm opening it up) a replacement is not to expensive £10 and is worth a try.

Don`t be to hard on the Ipod ... they are not designed your lying about and being inactive .. blame the owner.

The great thing about an Ipod it the accessories you can get for it. I can play movies from the ipod through our TV. I bought a reasonablly good docking station and use it as our home music station. You can get an attachment that allows you to play the ipod through your car sterio. Our latest is special headphones and a waterproof case so my wife can listen to the Ipod while swimming.

All that and it is no thicker than a packet of cigarette papers, pretty fantastic really.
