    Default New hard drive?

    Excuse me for being dippy...
My computer is nearly 5 years old...it keeps re-starting itself on start up (yep...its me again!!!)

Someone on a completley non-relevent forum, suggested this could be because my computer is old, and what i need to do is to buy a new hard drive...

Well, this is completely over my head....
    Should I?
    Shouldn't I?

I am completley fed up with this ever-occuring problem, there doesn't seem to be a reason or cure for it!

    Unhappy Re: New hard drive?

we have a computer that has no problem's att all and it's like 9 years old designed for Win98. We have a xp now on it and it have no problems. It's slow but that's the processor that is not better. I don't think your problem is in the hardware (if it haven't been in a car accident and got pretty smashed then it's the hardware)

What OS has it? Can you get it running in safemode? tell everything about it that can be to help please.

Can it be a virus? Do you have a windows cd? then maybe try to boot on the cd. see if it works. Or install a new OperatingSystem.

hope it helped just a shot in the dark...

Ok, I don't have windows cd, as we havn't got genuine windows!...can't afford to buy one now, but we did think the computer came with genuine windows initially, but i have found out since that the windows that came with the computer was a school one? And it has been over used, so has been locked.

As for a virus, i have done every virus check i can and have never found a virus, as far as i know the computer is completly clean!

    It runs in safe mode.

What is OS?...don't know about that.

The problem only occurs when i switch the computer on...it will start up fine, even get to the desk top page, and then without warning it will re-start.
It will then re-start several times.
I then get the BSOD, which is telling me my online security is not valid and will be truncated...
I get desktop again, the computer will then freeze and the only thing i can do is switch it off(if i press the re-start button, it never powers up fully)
After going through all this several times over, the computer will finally seem to stabalise and stay on, it will then be fine for as long as it is on...soon as i turn it off and try to turn it on again, the problems start up.....
So, i may be a computer dumby, but i believe the problem is with start up.
Not sure whether something is starting up with the computer which is causing a problem?...not sure how to check and possibly stop what ever it is in starting up...

This problem has been on-going for months and months now( i have posted about it on here before!)
It seemed to stabalise after my husband hoovered it(completley), but i don't think you should have to take it all apart like he did on a regular basis...for a start its dangerous!

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

The "OS" is the operating system ... for example Windows XP Home or Windows Vista Basic etc.

Assuming you are running XP click "start/Control panel"

in the control panel click on "System/Advanced" at the bottom you should see
" startup and recovery " click on the "settings" button.Uncheck "Automatically restart"

Now when you boot the computer you should get an error message when the problem happens. Let us know the exact wording.

I finally got the computer to start up, and i have turned off the re-start...
So far the computer hasn't re-started itself and i havn't had a problem...
As soon as i do, i will post back here!

    Right, ok....
    here goes...
After trying all day to get the computer on, and staying on, i have managed to actually get online!!!
I have had several periods of the computer freezing on me, and a couple of shut downs...
This is what the screen said when windows was shut down..
    (it means nothing to me!!!)

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down.
If this is first time...restart, if it happens again follow these steps..
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus,disk defrag or back up utilities.
    Check hard drive configuration.
    Check for any updated drivers.
Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart computer.
    Tech. info:
    ***STOP:0x00000023(0x0011012F,0xFFFFC000,0x0000000 0,0X00000000)
    beginning dump of physical memory
    physical memory dump complete.
cntact system administrator or tech support group for further assistance.

After re-starting, i got it again, but this time it said:
    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    Check new hardware or software
If problem continues, disable or remove newly installed hardware/software
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing
    Tech info:
    ***STOP:0X000000D1(0XF9AB9540,0X00000002,0XF9AB954 0,0X82BA1AEC)

    ***ACPI.sys ADDRESS F9AB9540 base at F9AA3000 datestamp 41107d27

I then restarted the computer...it froze, i turned it off and it would not even turn on again for about an hour!!!

    Can you help?????

This could be a fault with the memory (ram) in your pc, I would ask someone to download the memory test software from http://www.memtest86.com/, they can create a cd for you.

You can then boot of this cd on your pc and it will run a test on your pc,

Sorry goto the downloads section, and the link Download - Memtest86 v3.3 ISO image (zip), unzip the file.

you should be left with file that ends in .ISO , this is an cd image file, you can use your cd burning software to create cd from this image file..

once done, reboot your pc and boot of this cd
