    Default problem installing external hdd

I just got an Ultra 3.5" external hard drive and it won;t show up in my computer. It has an ESATA and USB connection I hooked the ESATA connection up like it was shown in the quick start guide ( there is no manual) and nothing. Then I disconnected that cable and hooked up the USB cable and tried that and nothing.
There is no driver that came with the drive except for a windows 98 driver and I have XP. The quick start guide said I didn't need a driver for XP it is plug and play.
I have an Intel D945GCL mobo w/ 1gig ram, dual core processor, and SATA internal hdd. Any suggestions????

You probably need to partition the drive and format it in disk manager, see here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

As it turns out the drive was defective and I exchanged it for Beyond Micro drive for a few dollars more and 250GB. The problem was that it wouldn't even show up in the computer to format it because the drive was dead. Thanks anyhow.
