I had a problem that would not allow my computer to boot up and was giving error messages. I could also smell something overheating. After inspecting I found that the CPU had overheated. ( I only know enough to be dangerous to my computer).
I replaced the motherboard from a p4pe to a p4pe Black pearl. I also replaced the CPU with a same Intel pentium 4 CPU with 478 socket and a 3.0 gh.
I also changed the hard drive and cables. All other parts were reused.
I then formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp with service pack 1.
If I restart the computer immediately everything boots up ok. But if I shut down and then boot up a few minutes later, I get error messages showing incorrect cpu ,no bios and also insert system disk and hit enter.
I have to reset the bios to the default and then use a system disk to reboot.
I am getting very confused and have not been able to make any progress. I checked the voltages and the cpu temp. all seem to be normal.
My power supply was an upgraded model when the computer was built . I think and hope that my only problem is in the bios or boot up areas. I don't understand why the computer will reboot ok when done from a restart but looses its settings when shut down and restarted. any help would be appreciated.
