Default CD-RW probs with Roxio Easy CD Creator v5

Roxio Easy CD Creator v5 with Memorex 40MAXX CD-RW drive; PIII Dell 4100 computer with 384MB RAM Windows 2000 SP4. All software is up-to-date.

I replaced the hard drive on this computer and reinstalled the operating system and all the software. This Easy CD Creator v5.1 was working with the 40MAXX CD-writer prior to the new hard drive install. I know this for sure, because I made a driver backup CD before I removed the old hard drive. (BTW: The software came with the drive originally.)

However, now with the new hard drive, every time I open the program I get an error "Easy CD Creator Engine Initialization has failed - Could Not Load CDR4". Then the program opens and I select "make a data CD". I drag files and folders to be copied. When I press the RECORD button, I get another error "There are no supported CD-Recorders available. Ensure that your CD-Recorder is powered on and that all cables are properly connected. You may also need to update Easy CD Creator to recognize your CD-Recorder. To update Easy CD Creator select web-checkup from the internet menu".

I searched the CDR4 error code on the Roxio web site and found nothing. I sent an email to tech support and their response was "[we don't support this anymore - you have to upgrade to a newer version, blah blah blah...]"

I had loaded the original program which was ver 5.1 and then I upgraded it to ver5.3.5.10. I still get the same two error messages. The program still will not work with the drive. I even flashed the drive to the latest version (ZWS4, I think).

This drive functions properly and reads, (I can view files in My Documents and I can also copy them from the CD to the hard drive), and the "TEST" function in the Easy CD Creator works - it gives me write speeds after evaluating the CD-RW. I don't know what else to do to get this to work. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ferret - thanks!
Strange that I should have that problem with a clean install of W2k (not an upgrade to XP). But I just resolved it - I found an engine update which worked to get me past that error.

Now I have a different error. I get the program open to make a data CD. I drag some files into the window to be copied. I click on the COPY button, it begins the process "file system generation", then it begins to copy. As soon as this happens I get a different error now:

<process has already exited> has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

I think I may need to uninstall and reinstall. But, I can't find roxizap.exe, which is supposed to be their "hard uninstall" - the page on Roxio is missing.

    UPDATE:
I found this on a web site and followed the instructions -
    ************************************
    http://www.oldversion.com/talk/archi...hp/t-1583.html

I had this filed away on an old cd: I think I got it from roxio's forums. Do this after uninstalling Roxio the usual way. If you don't find some of them, that's okay.

    For a "clean" install:

Goto C:\Program Files and delete the Adaptec folder if there
Goto C:\Program Files\Common Files and delete the Adaptec shared folder if there

Search for files and folders with the name “cdr*”
Delete any of the following files if found

    Cdral.dll
    Cdrtc.dll
    Cdr4_2k.sys
    Cdralw2k.sys

Go into the registry (click start, run, type regedit, hit ok)

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and delete the Adaptec folder if there
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software and delete the Adaptec folder if there

go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Currentcontrolset\Contro l\Class and highlight the folder that starts {4D36E965-E325…} and delete the upperfilters and lowerfilters from the right pane.

Exit from the registry, reboot your computer and try the install again.
    **********************************

I'm going to try a reinstall now.

Well, I reinstalled the original program and when I tried to reboot, I got the following Stop error:
    *************************
    Stop error 0x000000CE (0xEB4B02E0, 0X00000000, 0xEB4B02E0, 0x00000000)
    DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATI ONS
This driver may be at fault: cdr4_2k.sys

    address EB4B02E0 base at EB4B02E0 date stamp 00000000 - cdr4_2k.sys
    **************************
I rebooted and got the same stop error. I went into safe mode and installed the version update to 5.3.5.10. Rebooted. Same stop error. Rebooted. Went into safe mode, tried to uninstall the program. Of course, the windows installer can't be invoked, because I'm in safe mode! grrrrrrrrr......

I'm ready to start pulling my hair out.......... help please? I have also posted for help in the Roxio Community Forums......I'm so desperate!

Do you have access to another PC with a working cd/dvd drive?

    If so try this.

Locate the files cdralw2k.sys and cdt4_2k.sys, rename with a “.old” extension.

Then locate and copy those two files from any PC that runs as it should.

Then upload to your PC into the Windows/System 32/Drivers folder and re-boot.

    Hi Ferret.
I was able to restore the old files from the recycle bin in safe mode. Then I could boot normally - enough to run uninstall and get rid of the program. Then I ran Roxizap.exe to finish getting rid of everything, and finally, Ccleaner. The only problem I have left is the Roxio Update Manager - Windows Installer runs and tries to install Roxio Update Manager every time I boot up the computer. It will not uninstall from Add/Remove Programs.
