    Default Audio Isn't Working

The problem started when I bought a Microsoft Live Chat Headset.

It's a USB connection instead of just plugging into the audio input and outputs and it decided that when I plug it into the USB connection, the first thing it was going to do was stop the speakers/headphones working, but not let the headset work either. So I had to restart the computer to get it to work. Then when I took it out, restart again to get the others to work.

After I gave up on the headset, the speakers still didn't work normally. So I had to take out the speaker wire, plug in the headphones wire until they started working, then plug the speakers wire back in. (It normally worked when the headphones were plugged in on start-up though).

However, today neither are working at all. No matter how many times I mess about with which wire is plugged in, no sound at all

I have no idea what the actual problem is, other than it's probably Microsoft Live Chat Headset's fault.

    Some technical info:

    OS: Windows XP
Sound Playback Default Device: Realtek HD Audio output

Edit: I don't have the driver discs with me at the moment, so I can't try re-installing from them.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to how to fix the problem?

    Thanks.

I cant see the logic in your speakers not working now you have unplugged the headset.. check your Realtek audio properies to make sure none of the sockets have been "muted" and also check under "sound and audio devices" which is in control panel. Under the audio tab make sure your realtek audio device is selected under the "playback" settings

Nothing is muted. The devices are selected correctly.
