Default Bios and boot problem
I had a problem that would not allow my computer to boot up and was giving error messages. I could also smell something overheating. After inspecting I found that the CPU had overheated. ( I only know enough to be dangerous to my computer).

I replaced the motherboard from a p4pe to a p4pe Black pearl. I also replaced the CPU with a same Intel pentium 4 CPU with 478 socket and a 3.0 gh.

I also changed the hard drive and cables. All other parts were reused.

I then formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp with service pack 1.

If I restart the computer immediately everything boots up ok. But if I shut down and then boot up a few minutes later, I get error messages showing incorrect cpu ,no bios and also insert system disk and hit enter.

I have to reset the bios to the default and then use a system disk to reboot.

I am getting very confused and have not been able to make any progress. I checked the voltages and the cpu temp. all seem to be normal.

My power supply was an upgraded model when the computer was built . I think and hope that my only problem is in the bios or boot up areas. I don't understand why the computer will reboot ok when done from a restart but looses its settings when shut down and restarted. any help would be appreciated.

It could be a problem with your CMOS battery, its not saving the information, which is why when you power off and on, its not there.

You may need to try another battery

Thanks for the suggestion! However!!!

I removed the battery and tested it = 2.85 Volts. So I replaced it with one reading 2.96 volts. I reset the bios and saved it and the computer booted up. I then restarted the computer and it again booted up. I then shut it off for about 15 minutes and tried to reboot. The same fault messages appeared.

"Boot disk failure, Insert system disk and press enter"

For some reason the bios is being cleared when the computer is shut down for a few minutes.

The default bios can be retored and works ,but will be lost on the next shut down. Can I view the shut down or bios start up instructions on screen? I also tried to use a computer scan like Reg cure but each one will scan for problems and report that there are "387" problems but none will repair them without paying "$29.95".

I don't mind paying, but I need to know that it will fix the problem. Thanks for getting back to me!

I had this problem a couple of times recently with some new pc's , the cmos wasnt saving, even after changing the battery.

It turned out to be a system board fault in both cases, a new system board fixed the problem.

I am going crazy here trying to figure out how to resolve a problem, my system kept rebooting itself until it would no longer boot up at all and I get the messages: corruptBootConfigData. boot configuration is corrupt.
I can go into dos mode but get lost from there, I am running windows vista home prem, can anybody give advise on how to sort out, without getting to technical on the jargen, let's just say I am an idiot that can follow instructions!
Thanks
