    Unhappy IP Address problem

I have not been able to logon to the INTERNET for several days since I used a program to clean unused/unwanted files from my PC. I may have accidentaly erased a file needed for my IP address. First, when I try to logon I get a delayed blank MSN (my homepage) window that says it cannot find page. I check and see that I have INTERNET connection and info seems to be moving back and forth, so I right click the Icon for my wireless broadband on the toolbar on my desktop, and click "repair". The repair stops at IP address, saying it needs to be renewed and contact my PCs admin (Me!).
So, I then go to "Start", "Run", and type in "ipconfig" and it shows I do not have an IP address or default listed. But when I bring up my wireless broadband information, it lists my IP address and default. I would greatly appeciate any help. I may have removed a file. But if someone could show me how to bring up the screen where I can reenter, save and renew the information that would be great (if that will fix the problem).
    Thanks

Chack that in Control Panel--Network and internet connections---network connection--right click "LAN or high-speed connection" then properties--click on "internet protocol (TCP/IP)--properties and make sure that buttons are ticked for "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Click ok then try a repair on your connection.

Fablr, Thanks for the help, but I couldn't find the section you suggested to make the change. I use WINDOWS XP Home edition and it must be set up different from yours. Appreciate your help though.

Ok. Try this way. On your connection icon in system tray (near the clock) right click it. In the list menu click on "open network connections". This should bring up the Network Connections window and should show your Local Area Connection icon. Right click this and click on properties in the menu.
A new window should open with a list on it. Left click twice on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Another window should open and under the general tab check to see if both buttons are checked for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Fabler, I did find the area in my "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Both items were checked. Is there anything I can do now?
    Thanks again for your help.

Have you "power cycled" the router; ie., switched it off for a minute and switched it on again? Have you scanned for trojans etc?
As a last resort try a repair, http://www.xp-smoker.com/freeware.html

Yes, I did switch off the router and turn it back on, several times with no luck. I wonder if the router has gone bad? I have scanned for virus's and trojans but nothing shows up. My computer runs fine, no slow-down or anything like that, games play well, I am able to use the CD and DVD drives fine. Everything seems normal except getting on the internet. I would reinstall it, but I'd have to have someone to do it for me. Last night I tried the renew and release the IP address, but that doesn't help at all. I'm starting to lean toward a bad router. Any ideas?

    Thanks
