    Unhappy Connectivity and speed

My Internet Service provider is Verizon. I had a DSL line installed a year or so ago. The performance is irregular to say the least...either I can not log on at all or if I can, the speed at which I am able to access various sites is agonizingly slow. Occasionally, it works just fine and the performance is acceptable. Verizon has provided technical support and has tried to help, to no avail, I have been told that one of the problems is that I am more than 18,000 feet away from the "office" or server; another problem is that the underground telephone lines have not been maintained over the past thirty years. Why is there such great variablity in service from day to day? I am looking for an alternative. If I get Internet service from my cable company (my TV reception is good), is that service still affected by distance from the office? Is it likely to be more reliable than DSL? Is it a good idea to stay connected to the Internet once you are able to log on? Thanks for any ideas, George.

i believe both DSL and cable Internet speeds are largely dependant on the service provider and either the distance away from the switching station you are or how many subscribers are in your immediate area.

I would ask your cable company what sort of performance you will get before switching

Distance will always have an effect on speed, regardless of if it's a dial-up modem or T3 line.

I think the Tech-Master is correct. Check with the ISP and ask questions. Also, ask friends and neighbors about their connections if they have the service. Their opinions might not be as biased as the company itself.

I think that one of the main problems we currently have to endure is the speed at which servers release requested information, eg: data. I have a relatively slow pc (Athlone 2400 1GB RAM) but 20gb broadband via Virginmedia. A hobby of mine is WW2 research and consequently I visit many differing sites. Some are loads faster than others and some painfully slow, so slow I bin it and move on.

This is all down to servers. ISPs are quick to offer you the alleged Concorde of speeds but the servers are WW2 bombers by conparison. My own site takes a good few seconds to load its home page, its annoying.

Simply put; change ISP. Ask for mac code after you research for a better ISP.
    See what Verizon says then.
