    Cool Router Connection Issues

I have a GT701 DSL Modem and a Netgear router WGR614v7. I connect to the internet just fine using the modem alone, but when i set the router up with it, there's a network connection issue. Everything's set up right (I get the DSL, Internet, Ethernet lights), but the connection isn't complete. Previously, i had no issue connecting to the internet using the router, but for some reason the router doesn't seem compatible with the modem. I've tried running the set up disk again for the router, but I get the same response everytime about network issues. Did settings get changed somehow? I'm terrible with computers, so any help will be greatly appreciated!

(Assuming you are using a hard-wired connection to the router): What changed to cause the problem? I mean, did you physically move the equipment? Was there a power outage/spike/brownout? Did you install any new software?

If you suspect a settings change on your computer, can you try a restore point that goes back to a time before the problem appeared?

Have you tried a different ethernet cable to see if perhaps that has gone bad? Sometimes they can get pinched (moving furniture, etc.)

Sometimes, after an "abnormal power event", the internal ethernet switch can fail in the router - even though you see the light on. Can you enable the wireless function in the router and try to connect that way with another computer? If successful, then you know it is a settings issue on the problem computer, or a NIC card gone bad.

Have any settings in your firewall changed? I recently saw a similar problem after a "power event" that fried the ethernet switch inside a LinkSys WRT54G router and prevented the hard-wired computer from connecting to the internet, even after a new Belkin router was installed. I had to manually designate the LAN as "trusted" in the firewall. The computer then connected. Then I switched the setting back the way it was and everything was still connected and normal. I'm not sure why I had to do that (must have been a quirk in the F-Secure program).

    Good luck.
