Default Please Help! dopey blond with wireless issues!

    Hi

I live in a 4 bedroom farmhouse with relatively thick walls. My Netgear router is attached to my PC but the signal is quite poor and I cannot pick up a signal in my living room on my laptop! very annoying!

Can you recommend a booster or something that will extend the signal to my living room downstairs at the other end of the house?

I need to keep the router next to my PC upstairs to keep that on tinternet.........driving me mad please help!

    Thanks

Just to clarify, laptop is brand new and wireless is fine, it picks up a signal clear as bell in the same room as the router but as I walk out the room the signal drops

The answer might lie by buying a wireless repeater, which you could place near your laptop thus picking up a suffiently strong connection (Type wireless repeater into an Ebay search to get an idea of prices).

However you canm try some of the tips from this website to see if any help 10 tips for improving your wireless network

I do not use a wireless connection myself (Use a dongle for a laptop connection) But most routers re bi-directional (In othr words they send the signal in all directions) some people claim to improve signal strength by using silver foil to bounce the signal back to the direction of they want it in (If that makes sense ) ie construct a cowl of tinfoil around the router to hopefully send the strongest signal towards your laptop ... may not work but the tinfoil will only cost pennies so worth a try

Setting up a WAP (wireless access point example here) may still be difficult if you can't get a good signal to pick up. Another thought would be to look at getting a Powerline Enthernet Adapter (example here) This would carry the internet signal along the existing home wiring from one plug to the other. Once at the other side, you would be able to set up the WAP with a decent signal and send the wireless out from that point. One thing though, I understand that these powerlines work best when they are on the same circuit - in other words, they have a difficult time jumping breakers and maintaining a good signal. Just a thought.
