Default A safe computer.....
Posted elsewhere on this forum regarding computer problems....
But, in the meantime....what is the best way to keep my computer safe(If i ever fix the problem it is having now!)
Can anyone reccommend any good virus protection/spyware stuff?
What is the best way to 'clean' your computer...at the moment i use Ccleaner....

Also, i have downloaded 'RegClear', which, when run on my pc has come up with over 800 problems and errors....BUT it wont fix them unless i register, which costs money....!Is it worth it? Or is there a just as good registry cleaner that is free?
(by the way, my windows xp is not genuine...not sure if this could be the cause of many of my problems...)

Hi dude I have had a lot of problems with adware, spyware and similar. (just look all my posts)

anyway I have no problems anymore because I found some good antivirus that is free too

I use Avast Home www.avast.com and Lavasoft AdAware www.lavasoft.com and all is working great. Don't know if your nongenuin XP should let in more viruses than a genuin. but if your problems won't go away then test the programs above.

Best wishes

Well, i may just try the programs you mentioned,Afohot, as after husband completley hoovered the computer (he went inside it...SO dusty!) the computer seemed to work fine...for about 2 months.
Now, guess what!...
Its started re-starting on start up again! Takes about 5-6 attempts to finally get the thing to stay on!

That's not very nice...

Be sure to have the activate code to Avast. Get it on http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php and you're ready to go

The Avast works in safemode of windows too but then you need to manualy start it. It vill delete all infected restore-point files too.

well... Good virus hunting

/ Have a nice day

Well, that didn't go according to plan!
I downloaded the avast...went ok...BUT, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to actually set it so i can view ANY internet page!!!!!
Im a complete donut when it comes to anything computer related really, and after stopping my original anti virus(which, by the way is F-secure from talk talk), i started up the avast one, but when i tried to open any page on the internet i got the 'page not found' page!!!

I have tried and tried to work out how to set it to my needs, but unfortunatley it is way over my head, and i feel im likely to do more harm than good!(which at the moment i really don't need to be doing!!!)
I need something that is self-explanatory!!!

Oh..as for the f-secure, i have that back on, and have un-installed the avast(my computer gets confused to easily!) But on start up, i always get the BSOD as it re-starts itself repeatedly, when i let the BSOD run(so annoying) i ALWAYS get a 'problem' showing up regarding F-secure...it is 'not valid' and is always 'truncated'???This obviously means nothing to me, but i did look up 'truncated' in the dictionary(!) and it means 'to shorten'???
Not sure if this means anything to anyone?

Unhappy Re: A safe computer.....
Hi again. I don't know anything abouth F-secure but if it's deactivatet it shouldn't do anything.

Can you get into windows? if not try system restore.look att the "articles" on this site and they tell you how...

Try to put all to it's former state and try this http://www.avast.com/eng/down_cleaner.html

then if that worked then it's great I think.

is the F-Secure a pay program or free? If it's free can you uninstall it and reinstall without any bigger problems? or switch to avast... it's your decision.

tell me how it's going...

F-secure is a pay for anti virus/firewall/ scanner type thing that came with talktalk...I have activated it again as i wouldn't have any virus protection seeing as i couldn't seem to use avast...

I do system restore alot, but it makes no difference...still all the problems! I even got rid of EVERYTHING on the computer...any games that were installed..software that wasn't nessesary etc, still had problems!

The main problem seems to be on start up, as when i eventually get the thing to stay on, it will stay on until i turn it off(like all day...when i get it to stay on, i am too scared to turn it off!!!)

I would quite happily get rid of F-secure, as like i said when i get the BSOD, F-secure is always on the list...being invalid and truncated...not sure if this may be where all my problems are coming from, but i would need another good anti-virus programme, and when i in-stalled avast, i couldn't get any web pages to load up!

I;ll have to have a look about and see what i can come up with!
