Marun.gen! infection

Hi again, been a while since last time but now it trouble again...

some time ago I got some totally unexpected BSOD and there was always different messages in the BSOD. Then when rebooted I get the send error report from Microsoft and then it's saying that the "VirTool:WinNT/Marun.gen!" is detected. I have done a complete Avast Scan and Sophos scan. Nothing unusual is found. But the BSOD keeps coming... I have done a HJT scan

I can't find anyting suspicious but I'm not that pro on hijackthis logs...

Are you sure your antivirus software is up to date.

Sophos scan should have picked up on it. Are you running the scans in safe mode?
You may also have to turn off System restore.

I have been able to get rid of the marun. No more BSOD for three days

But I still have something. Avast says that the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe is infected with


Win32:Small-EPJ [Trj]

It have been removed several times by avast, but on reboot it's back.

If it keeps coming back after being removed, it is re-installing itself and if you have had the problem for a while it is possibly in your system restore files as well.

Switch of system restore
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405

Remember you will lose all your restore points doing this.

Then boot into "Safe" mode. Normally by tapping the F8 key while the computer starts booting. When in safe mode run the virus scan to remove the Trojen.

Reboot as normal .. and remember to turn on "System Restore"

That should kill it.
