Windows Movie Maker

Okay, here's an easy question for you Fabler: I have a Compaq Presario desktop running Win XP SP2. Windows Movie Maker was installed with the service pack and worked fine for a while. Now, for some reason, it is acting up - it won't let me make NTSC movies to play on the DVD player like it used to. I'm thinking that this problem (along with a few others I'm finding) are a result of my C:\ drive getting a bit too full before I added a second HDD and cleared a lot of stuff out. The question is, if I uninstall it and go to Windows Update, will it offer me the option to reinstall it again, so I can get it working properly?

p.s. same question about IEv7! LOL [it appears that my processor resources are constantly near 100% whenever I click on an action in any program and the computer has slowed down tremendously...] all scanned, no spyware/trojans, etc.

After uninstalling WMM I'd run a reg cleaner then follow instructions (updates); http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...viemaker2.mspx .
Slow PC, you've ran antivirus and all the other anti's so I'd defrag and check for errors on the harddrive.
Clean out temp files etc., using Ccleaner.
Pagefile (Virtual Memory) -- Right click MY Computer - select properties - Advanced tab - Performance - advanced tab, check that it's set Initial size to one and a half times the amount of memory you have fitted i.e. 512MB memory = set to 768MB, set maximum to double your memory amount i.e. 512MB memory = 1024MB .
If your hard drive is full and there is not enough room for the pagefile this can slow down, freeze or even cause the PC to crash (restart).
When you have done the above then check in task manager your CPU usage and processes.

Well, I've run Ccleaner, Auslogics Defrag, SuperAntiSpyware, did a ScanDisk at bootup (no idea of the results - is there a log file somewhere I should check? I never saw it finish!)

I did a "RESET" to the IE7 because it was so messed up it wouldn't show some web sites properly.

Got rid of Symantec's Norton Internet Security and put F-Secure on. Ran another scan - it only found the one quarrantined item left from Norton (from a few years ago).

I had set the virtual memory to be system managed, but set it back to what you suggested - made no difference.

The 80 gig HDD is 50% full now. Everything on PassMark DiskCheckup is fine - no imminent failures in any of the SMART data.

Windows Movie Maker does NOT show up in add/remove programs. There is no way to uninstall it - nothing recognises it to remove it. Very strange. Thanks for the download link - would have never thought to find it there. Wonder if I just try to reinstall it, if that will reslove the problems...

IE7 is working now, but it is hogging all memory and keeping my computer at just about 100% capacity. It is slower than molasses in January! For iexplore.exe process: Mem usage = 116,276 and VM size = 173,928 at present. Not sure what to do at this point?

Oh yes, one more thing: Every once and a while the computer would try to read drive A:; Now, all of a sudden it will go crazy trying to read the drive for 10-15 seconds sometimes - for no reason - I can't figure it out.

The only things I could remove in WMM were the two folders, 1033 and shared folders, but I did reinstall over the top and that worked.
Puzzled about your cpu usage though. I use Opera and that uses 30% cpu on average, 187,600k mem usage 195,000k Vm. at the moment. Iexplore.exe uses much less.
Does iexplore.exe run even if IE7 is not open? Have a read here; http://www.computing.net/security/ww...rum/15112.html .

Well, I have to answer you from another computer, because IE7 now just locks up and I can't do anything on the computer with it open. No, iexplore.exe does not show up in the running processes when I have IE7 closed.

Here's something: Last night I set up F-Secure to run a full system scan before I went to bed. When I got up, I had an error and the scan never finished:

FSPC.EXE application error. The instruction at "0x00c313ac" referenced memory at "0x00000024". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

Wow. Maybe it's time to reformat.....?? What a PAIN!

Why not try a system restore first?
