    Default DirectX install failure

Hi. My my os is win98se

I recently upgraded my sound card, and had no sound in games or movies

a friend of mine told me to remove directX from my computer and then reinstall it

I used a tool called 'directX uninstaller', did everything noticed in the help file, and it seems to have worked out ok

The problem is that now, i have no directx on my computer, and when i try to install the 9.0c version, an error appears

It happens when installing the joystick.INF file, the progression bar freezes for a while, and then a window pops up that the directx interface was not able to copy the file, i click Ok and a 'installation failed' error comes out.

I tried everything that google told me to: get the old version of joystick.INF from my windowsCD, and install it on my computer, but that did not wok

I also tried installing the joystick.inf manually from the directx.cab file, no result as well

That's weird, it happened to me one day but I just restarted my PC and everything was just find. Try to run chkdsk from the command line and it will run a system check at the next startup. There might be some errors that Windows can fix. After that try to install again the direct x, this time get it from Microsoft's website, don't use the copy you have on your PC. If the problem continues, post here again.

Try to copy the installations files *.cab from 9.0c setup files to (a copy of) of 9.0b setup files , and then run the installation of 9.0b with 9.0c's cab files.
