Thread: Cannot get my external hard drive installed

I have a beater tecra 8100 laptop. I have purchased an acomdata external hard drive, usb 2.0. I have a sinking feeling my old laptop does not have a usb 2.0 internal driver. I am running windows 2000 and the laptop is a toshiba tecra 8100. When I followed the instructions to hook things up, the instructions said I would not need the cd for windows 2000 because my operating system would find a driver on its own. Well the hardware wizard came up but it did not find a suitable driver. I figured there was on on the installation cd so I installed the hardware and told it to look on the cd rom for a driver. It looked okay for a moment and it said it found a driver and was copying it. However I did not get a succesful installation. The wizard came back and said an error occurred during the installation of the device. The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance.

Any ideas what I need to do?

I would uninstall any software/drivers you put in for this device and remove the device itself from the system. Reboot the PC, then install the software [U]first, it should prompt you along the lines to connect the device to your PC, at that time it should install the correct drivers. Let us know how it pans out.

Okay so I found out the root cause which is the external hard drive that I purchased does not work with 2000 NT. On the package it does say it works with 2000 but after calling customer support they said it doesnt work with 2000 NT... my bad...
