Default Windown 2000 wont power off at shutdown

    Hi

Got a Compaq PC and when shutting down, it goes through all the motions but then just hangs on a blank blue screen, not responding to anything and i have to manually shut down.

I tried running a scandisk, and after rebooting it manually in order for it to start scanning, once the scan was done, it said 'Please wait while Windows reboots your PC' and it just hung there.... so it cant restart, shutdown or anything

Ive looked in the BIOS, nothing in OS Power Management, tried stopping explorer.exe and restarting with no luck; restarted PC in safe mode and also wont restart

Does anyone have any ideas or is a rebuild the only option?

    Cheers!!

See if this MS-KB Article (http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=315409) has any clues. There are lots of reasons for this problem...

Tried to resolve using those solutions, still not shutting down - could a format be the solution?

Well, that's the extreme solution. Of course, if you've tried a system repair from the 2K CD and you still can't boot, you're probably running out of options. Of course, if it happens to be a 2K/MB compatibility issue, you may still have the same problem after the rebuild.

I dont think the user ever let us know if the problem was fixed but as a guidline you need to make sure your BIOS has ACPI or APM enabled, and check the following

    To enable APM:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options
    2. Click on the APM tab.
    3. Check the Enable APM check box.

Some users have still experienced the same problem even after changing the bios systems and have had to re-install windows 2000
