Default Very low system resources (42%)

My system resources are only 42% free - I have been told that it should be alot higher than that (in the 80-85% range) for optimum system performance. I know from previous discussions with techs that the low free resources is because there are too many programs open and running in the background but I do not know how to close these programs - can anyone out there help me ?
    Thanks alot,

Sometimes quite a few resources can be taken up by programs that start up everytime your computer starts up. Take a look down by your clock and see if there are programs running down there that you may not need running all the time. Most of the time you can right click on them and go into the Preferences/Settings/Properties and tell them not to run at startup. Just make sure that you don't turn off your AntiVirus/security software or any other programs you know that you actually want to run at startup.

Another way to remove things from startup would be to look in the Startup folder by going to Start > Programs > Startup and deleting things that you don't want starting up, but again be carefull not to remove things that you want.
