    Default broken dvd player

I am trying to repair/upgrade an old computer. The computer is working. os win98. Pentium III 500mz. 128mg ram 20gb hd. The dvd player will not eject and I would like to replace it with a dvd read/write device and would not like to spend a lot of money on a new one. Any suggestions to avoid conflict issues? I would also like to upgrade the system to xp. I have a "restore disk" from my new computer and am wondering if I can upgrade from the restore disk. I do not know what kind of mother board I have. Thanks. I am a new member and looks like you have a lot of good beginner as well as advanced advice. Put me in the beginner group.

As far as I can remember Win98 didn`t support DVD drives. Are you sure it is just plain old 98 and not 98se which did have support drivers.

Afraid you can`t install XP on the old computer from a restore disk.

The restore disk is for restoring your computer to the factory settings, you can`t use this to do a fresh install on another machine.

Quite apart from that if you did manage to install XP it would be painfully slow to use. I can run XP slowly on a system 725mhz but even your harddrive at 20 gig would soon fill up.

I would give up on the XP thought, Try to get a copy of Win98se (No longer supported by MS) and proceed that way.
