Default How To Go About Troubleshooting 98

My computer that is running win98 runs sooooo slowly, takes forever to boot , how would a novice go about troubleshooting the problem?

It is a Pentium 2, 10 gig HD, 128 MB RAM, is a Gateway, and has a few games, McAffee AV software and a few other minor things.

I went into msconfig and disabled a few things that ran at start up, but I'd like to boost the machine if possible. Would adding some RAM help?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Unless you are running some programs (like games) that use up pc resources, 128 RAM should be sufficient. although adding more always helps, however there is a debate with windows 98 that once you get to 512Mb or above it dosent take advantage of it. but thats a whole different topic .

What i would do if you havent already is
    1. Check your free disk space make sure your drive isnt full
    2. Run a defrag
    3. Clear temp files
    4. Try CCleaner, AdAware SE, and Spybot - S&D (all these can be found under Free Tools in the right had column of this page)

If this dosent help then we can take a look at your startup list and see whats in there.

    thanks
