Default Re: How to reinstall Win98 OS?
The error I'm getting is "Registry File Failure. Can Not Load....config.sys."
I can't boot into safe mode, or safe mode with networking, or debugging mode, or even safe mode with C prompt. It keeps looping and giving me an error.

Okay, here's the situation now: I had win2kPro on the computer and problems with the HP USB CD writer. I followed their instructions to remove their registry entry and it blew up the computer. So, I did a "fast repair" in win 2000 using the recovery diskette I had made when I first installed the OS. It boots up fine now, and I have windows, office, f-secure working (and a few other minor programs). However, here's the hitch: although I was all the way up to SP4 & IE6, I only had IE5 running. So, I manually downloaded and installed IE6. Then, setting up "auto update", I noticed it wasn't working, and when I went to the MSUpdate web site, it didn't work either. That's when it hit me - looking in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, there is nothing about Windows 2000 at all, as if it doesn't exist on the computer. I guess I lost all my registry entries. Is there any way to get them back? or, am I stuck now, reinstalling the OS and starting from scratch?
Thanks.

Thanks. I had a read there, and a few other places in MS support.

Unfortunately, the registry backup I had made is gone.

I tried C:> REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL to try and get everything registered again, but it didn't work. Rather than trying to re-register every program and feature separately, I did a "repair" a couple of times to the OS with the install disk. Still, nothing more was registered.

Part of the problem was the BITS was not registered ( Background Intelligent Transfer Service ) so Windows Update wouldn't work. I could have registered that service by editing the registry, but that would only solve part of the problem. So, I just decided to format and start over.

Well, thank you all for your help. It's good to have somewhere "capable" to go to ask questions.
