Default Don't know what's wrong with it...Someone please help!

I have had my Acer Aspire 5050 laptop for just over a year. In recent months it has been driving me insane.

Firstly are the memory issues. It keeps telling me it is low on memory etc etc, so I try and delete some stuff, move them to different places and every single time I do so it says I need permission and refuses to do it. For instance, I went to uninstall my logitech webcam software. It went fine until I kept getting a pop up trying to re-install it that will not go away, I have to drag it into the corner of the screen whenever I use my laptop now. I tried to delete the actual folder and files manually but it says I need permission, don't know from who, thats all it says. It does this with pretty much everything I try to do.

It has also began crashing every time I play the sims, sometimes mentioning memory problems, other times just saying the program isn't working. I've really given up and am tempted to buy a new laptop and start over. Any ideas on what I can do? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Sorry I assume your using Vista, and I am still on XP, but I can try to help a little.

First the low memory problem. Do you know how much memory is installed in your laptop?

    Best to go here :
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.aspx?cpe=CHAWKuk

This site will tell you how much memory you can install, what type, and you can purchase the memory from them at a reasonable price and normally very quick postage times.

Uninstalling programs ... How are you ininstalling the programs? It sound as if you need to be in Administer mode.

However anytime I uninstall a program and get a problem ... i re-boot into safe mode (Tapping the F8 key when the computer is booting).

Finally did you make backup disks of your system, I believe you should have been given that option when you first got the laptop. If you did they should restore your machine to the way it was when you first got it.

Don`t give up on the old Lappie yet

    RE: Memory
Does the error message you're getting mention anything about "virtual memory"? If so, you may just need to change the settings to "system managed".

One more thing: Vista has this security feature called UAC (User Account Control), which stops a "limited user" from making changes to the system. The reason you keep getting asked for permission and a password is probably because the user account you are logged in to is a "limited account". You need to make the changes from an "administrator account".

As the original problem occurred almost 2 years ago, i would imagine your answer might be a bit late to help.

Also formatting ones harddrive should (in my book) be the very last thing someone trys. A great many users have never experienced a format and re-install and get themselves into even greater problems by not having the correct disks or drivers, even not realising that they would lose all the important docs/pics on their machines.
