Default Vista gone wild - keyboard and mouse lock up when idle

I have Window Vista Home Premium-SP1 (32 bit), Dell XPS 420, 4GB Ram.

A few weeks ago, I used Hibernate, and since then, many peripherals and some programs are not working properly. If I let my pc stay on for more than 20 minutes or so, I am unable to use my mouse and keyboard (bluetooth), thus I have to shut down using the power button. My printer keeps giving me a USB002 error, Explorer and Outlook 2007 crash, I can't run some of my registry scanning programs and spyware detectors, and the anti-virus (AVG) scan won't run. Additionally, now our wireless router has stopped working, so we have to connect our laptop directly to the verizon router (which we use for our wired pc). All of these worked before I used Hibernate (one time!).

I was unable to access the power options, so I called Dell, and the rep had me run c:\windows\system32\sfc /scannow. He also told me that Microsoft has issued a bulletin about problems using Hibernate in Vista. I am not savvy enough to understand much of what MS bulletins say, so that is of no help to me. Running the sfc /scannow allowed me to access the power options, but when I make changes to power options (never, never) it does not allow me to save them ("Save" is grayed out).

What else can I do to get everything to work again?

I have a Vista Home Premium (not Dell) laptop and use hibernate every night; matter of fact, I probably "shutdown" the thing only once a week-and I've never had a problem. I have heard of an issue MicroSoft have with the keyboard system file becoming corrupted in XP - but this is evident when you use the fast switch users function (instead of logging off), and that will cause the keyboard and mouse to freeze up. The solution is a reboot.

It bothers me though, that you have problems with AVG, Outlook, spyware programs and your wireless router - all of which contain protection for your computer. Could it be infected? Have you tried booting in safe mode (without networking) and running an AVG scan? or install Malwarebytes' AntiMalware from download.com and install and run in safe mode.

If you determine your system is clean, then it sounds to me like you may need to get the system recovery disks out, reformat the HDD and reinstall the operating system. Be sure to back up all your data first.

If you only have a recovery disk and not a Vista disk then this should come in useful for repairing; http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/
