    Default Intermittent Internet Access Problem

For some time I have been having a problem with my internet access. The problem is that my computer will lose access to the internet after operating seemingly perfectly for some random period of time between a number of hours or days. When the access is lost the computer Network & Sharing Center indicates that the connection is still good and that all hardware is operating correctly. In this condition I anm unable to ping most websites using either www address or IP. If I restart the computer the connection is always good again but will always drop out again after a period of operation. I have disabled TCP/IPv6 but that did not seem to eliminate the problem. The system is an HP Media Center PC with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+, 3 GB RAM, and 450 GB HDD. The NIC is a Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet card. The wireless router is a Netgear WNR854T RangeMax Next Router. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. Any ideas about the possible causes and solutions to this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

Are you connecting to the internet via wireless?

No, my laptop is connecting via wireless but it does not exhibit the problem. The problem is occuring in my desktop PC, which connects to the internet via a router and a cable modem. A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled the ZoneAlarm free firewall from the desktop PC and replaced it with the Comodo free firewall software. Since the change the problem has not happended again, even when I let the PC run continuously for days at a time. I'm assuming that something got corrupted in the ZoneAlarm that caused the problem. I was thinking about reinstalling ZA to see if the problem comes back but have decided to let sleeping dogs lie and to keep the Comodo as long as my internet access continues to function correctly. Thanks for your support.

Fray - Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind if the problem ever reappears but for now it seems to have disappeared with the change from Zone Alarm to Comodo firewall. I've switched all of my computers over to Comodo and they all seem to be working fine. Thanks again

Fraileyvolks, so do you just scour the help sites and post your link to supportrix for grins? or do you get a kickback for every link you post that gets clicked? I think this avmechanic site provides excellent support and I don't see the need to refer people elsewhere for every single question that is posted.

You could be right - there could be something about the ZoneAlarm installation that was causing the problem, since it appears to have disappeared by switching to Comodo. Comodo is one of the best around and you should be quite happy with it. I install it regularly on many of the computers I work on. Thanks for letting us know how you resolved your problem.
