Default Running an old PC game under Vista

Now that my Vista install is running almost as well as the former XP, (thanks to Fabler, Tech-master and other experts on this site), I have turned my thoughts to trying to actually get some fun from my PC, in the form of installing and running some of my old PC games.

One game I used to enjoy was Doom, (not the latest Doom 3) in its many versions including Ultimate Doom for Windows, Final Doom, Plutonia and so on. These later, Windows versions ran like a dream on XP, but (you guessed it), Vista is having none of it. It's the old story; they will not run, even in legacy mode, etc.

I am wary of trying too hard to get these versions to work, as I am no expert and I don't want to upset my delicate, volatile Vista operating system.

Has anyone managed to get these versions of Doom (not including Doom 3 which many say runs OK under Vista, but I don't have), running reliably on their Vista machine?

If so, I'd be mighty grateful for any advice.

Ferret, thank you for that link - the fix seems straightforward enough even for me, so I will give it a try.

There must be millions of Doom players worldwide, left stranded as I am, unable to play the game since leaving XP. If the fix is as simple as copying and renaming a .dll file, one wonders why it could not have been incorporated in one of the innumerable update files automatically downloaded since I installed Vista.

Of course, that would have been too easy ...
