Thanks Ferret, you live up to your name ok!! I have bought the spotmau CD, looks like a neat piece of kit.
"The Ferret" was a nickname I picked up at work some 30+ years ago (Nothing to do with creatures or computers). Even my wife & grownup kids refer to me as "The Ferret"
Funny how these things stick to you.
The Spotmau Cd is a handy piece of kit to have, I have several of these types of rescue CDs in my collection but tend to rely more on HD cloning software for my own computers and those that I get to work on in a regular basis. Anyone who has tried re-installing Windows on a Packard Bell machine will know why![]()
Once I had purchased and downloaded Spotmau, I began bloody tweaking and of course, knocked myself out, figuratively speaking. Lost all net connection and was up until 2am trying to sort it out. This morning after deliberating in bed, and sleeping, I decided to try and work backwards over what I had done. Then, by accident, I arrived on the page Services Management and remembered it had 'opitimised services' last night. Luckily there was a return default switch so I hit it and it re-optimised 161 services in my pc!!! This did the trick. And here I am. It had also changed my desktop to what I remember windows 98 was on, so it had switched off totally 90% or so of vista services.
I do not mind admitting this as it may save someone else from doing the same. What a plonker!!! I do not know yet if MS Word has been fixed. Just opened it and closed it, and no message appeared but I am not holding my breath, yet.
I did see a warning messsage somewhere which says, 'error, go for an upgrade'. But this version, alothough 2002, has nothing wrong with it apart from the runtime error on screen on closedown; and I have not had it all that long, 2-3 years, so I am not about to splash out on version **** just yet.
In the subject of reinstalling, My HP Pavilion a6000 quad core has the factory partition with vista home premium on it for reinstall BUT it can only to a virgin install. I can recall with XP it would over write windows but leaving settings and programs intact. Why can Vista not do this, or it it a sep issue and should have its own thread.
I think I have asked before but can you expand the forum slightly to include services and queries not yet covered. Vista help, for example, is too general.

Update. I wonder what part of 'screwed it up but managed to fix it' does Spotmau not understand?
I went into their home site and reported that, in my opinion, services management tweaks were not to be taken lightly and they should consider either removing it from their software or posting a severe warning that it will screw up your pc OR remove all net programs from said software.
I allowed the software to tweak some services to ensure a faster machine, it did, it killed all my net access programs and reverted my screen to something out of windows 98. After about 4 hours I went to bed not knowing what was wrong and woke up with a thought, so came down in the morning and reset service management to default and had to reset my desktop to vista, cant remember how I fdid the last bit but its ok now.
So Spotmau came along and asked me to do something or other, I told them no need as I had fixed it be reversing windows tune up,service management. They still could not understand my recommendations and asked if I would allow remote access for an engineer, yes ok I said and, last night, was sent some software to download, it then asked me for permission, granted, and the engineer came online in my pc. It was strange watching my cursor wandering across the software.
He made a few tweaks, said it had been fixed, and left after an hour of testing. WHAT had been fixed exactly, but he had gone. Now I discover my pc is actually a wee bit faster but he has turned off my DVD/CD autoplay, a must have for me! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. Sent another ticket, how do I re=enable autoplay when the original spotmau button will not activate under my cursor.
Check out instructions (2) here to run a reg. fix to turn Autoplay back on.
The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive
I followed all steps and, including 5, and it says my cd is autoplay enabled but in spotmau, after health check, its green, marked disabled. There is a file they told me to pen but does not show up in vista search, says it does not exist - (Okay, here is the solution: Start menu--run "gpedit.msc", the settings has been attached.)
"gpedit.msc does not exist in Vista home or basic (Microsoft decided not to include it)
It is still possible to add it if really required (See here for required files & instructions. NOTE:- I have not tried this so I would suggest you make back-ups first incase something goes wrong)

added gpedit and other dll's, now I get the message module cannot load and loads of chinese writing
