What about if you create a new user? This will create a new profile, do you get the same problems using a new profile?

Okay, so I ran across this - wondering if it might help?
CleanHandlers Free Download – AutoPlay Cleanup Utility for XP and Vista My Digital Life

If that doesn't work, I am still thinking this is a "Services" issue. I wonder if you could do a clean boot, and then start re-enabling the non-MS services on subsequent reboots, to see if you can identify the culprit?

ummm....we don't do autoplay on drive C - the OS is on there. You want to work on your CD drive, right? But maybe that's because they say this is for Vista...still the autoplay v2 is the same, I believe...

Allegedly it found 31 out of date drivers BUT it wanted $30 before I could fix them.

bought the program, valid 12 months, as it seems like a decent program to have for drivers.

I also bought Windows Magazine just now, on the CD of Essential Apps is somethging called autoruns but waiting for routine backup to finish before I have a look. Will let you know .................................

I may have found something for you - I was perusing the Vistaheads forum and found a reference to an autoplay fix VBS script for Vista. The link given by the MVP was broke, so I contaced him and he sent me a valid link. This is a VBS script to enable autorun in Vista.
