Default Vista SP1 causing major problems
TechMaster wrote:
Microsoft's Service pack for Vista is apparantly having bad side effects on a number of well-known third party security programs, Microsoft have confirmed there are "reliability" issues with Vista SP1.

Some of the programs affected are KV Antivirus, Trend Micro's Internet Security, BitDefender AV and Zone Alarm Security Suite, Vista computers will no longer be able to use the software which are suppose to protect their machines against hackers and malware.

This is just another problem to add to the list for Vista Users, as for me i guess i will stick to XP for sometime to come.

TechMaster - Oh great....what about F-Secure? Where did you find this? I need to do some research - I almost upgraded today! ugh.

As a general rule if SP1 isn't offered via Windows update then your laptop/PC isn't ready for SP1. Mine was not offered via the update route but being a tinkerer I bit the bullet and downloaded and installed the 'stand-alone version'. I was fortunate and everything ok. Comodo firewall, Avast AV and a few antispyware programs.
Main thing to watch out for is after downloading then you have to stop your security programs including Defender. Also I stopped the sidebar before installing.
With windows update I suggest you pick the choice to download but let me choose when to install. You can then download, disconnect from the 'net and stop your security programs. Install SP1 and re-establish everything. You can also uninstall SP1 via 'uninstall a program' in Control Panel.

Thanks Fabler for the info. I saw SP1 in my windows update and started downloading it. When it was ready to install, I realized it did not download the full install and I would not be able to disconnect from the internet, so I cancelled it and went to the download site - it should take several hours for my computer to download it (and I haven't done that yet).

So, you think that, if it showed up in my windows update, then F-secure should be compatible and I shouldn't have any problems? I don't need a hornet's nest right now - too many other computers to work on at present.

This is what Microsoft recommends; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../bb968859.aspx . It no longer advises to stop security programs ?
Ah well, I'd use the Windows update.
If you get any problems it's uninstallable.

After a long consultation with an HP techie this morning it was decided to install SP1 was was sitting waiting for me in Update.

Everything seems to have installed correctly and I am experiencing nothing more than a cosmetic problem with my IE settings.

Zone Alarm is nothing to do with SP1. I bought this pc about 2 months ago and tried to install Zome Alarm onto the pc. Jeez, Haywire!! Alarm!! Does Not Like!!

VERY uncompatible. So I removed it and activated Vista Firewall, which I have been informed, is much better than the XP version. No problems since.

Norton was pre-installed too, I soon got shut of that!! Its crap! I use avast for my AV, so much quicker.

Okay, I installed SP1 on a Toshiba A215-S6804 with Vista Home Premium and F-Secure last night. It took a total of 45 minutes from download to reboot to install and finish. I only got 1 error about writing a mouse file, which disappeared upon the next reboot. IE works fine, no window sizing issues. DVD burner is working, wireless connection and network are fine, mouse is fine - everything seems to be A-OK. I did notice when comparing my driver backup files (pre & post SP1) that, although the number of files is the same, the bytes are different (the post-SP1 having a tad fewer). Glad I have a backup of both versions of drivers for future catastrophies (LOL).
