Default New PC 1 stop error and no icons or taskbar

    Hello,

I have a new PC with Windows XP Media Center. I received an application popup "Explorer.exe-application error The instruction at 0x7c8010e referenced memory at 0x7c80180e. The memory could not be written. Check okay to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug the problem" I am not positive as to what choice I made. My pc booted and brought me to my login, I logged in and it seemed okay for about 5 seconds, then all the desktop icons and the taskbar disappeared. The only function I had was "cntrl alt del" which brought up the task manager. I tried a reboot, same problem. tried "last known good config" and same problem.

I read some of the earlier threads where others had issues with no icons etc So I started my pc in safe mode. I then checked Event Viewer, System events which showed the above error 3 times but with different "0x" numbers. The only other error I could find was "NAT was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insuffiecent resources or an internal error. The data is the error code."

I have installed Avast Antivirus, Netspy protector, HP printer, SBC DSL sofware, Yahoo Messenger. I also networked my laptop, printer and new desktop. I have my dsl modem linked to a router.

I seemed to be working fine until after the networking, SBC DSL software, and Yahoo were installed.

Sorry for the long post but thought maybe the more info the better.

    Thanks for any help...
    Kris

P.S. It seems that loosing icons and the taskbar are a frequent result of many different problems.

Hi, you could try the following, they are for XP but you should be apply them for media center too.

    The Easy Work Around

    1/ Boot to your desktop

2/ Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager

3/ In Task manager click the New Task button on the General tab

4/ In the New Task dialogue box type: 'explorer.exe' (without the quotes) and press OK

5/ The Windows desktop should now appear

    System Restore Option

If you manage to get to a working desktop using the Easy Work Around method, it may be worth attempting a System Restore. To be on the safe side you may want to restore your system back to the earliest available restore point. You will, however, have to reinstall any software or updates that you installed after the selected restore point.

    New User Account

The next option, assuming you can get to a working desktop using the Easy Work Around method, is to create a new user for your pc in the hope that the New user Account will produce the desired effect, i.e., bring up the desktop.

    1/ Go to Control Panel

    2/ Click User Accounts icon

3/ In the User profile window select Create New Account

4/ Follow the New User Wizard to set up the new account

5/ Reboot your PC and log on as the new user

    Repair

The final option is to do a repair of the Windows XP Operating system. For this you will need the Retail Version of the Windows XP CD.

However, you PC should have come with some way of 'restoring' the system back to factory settings. this will usually come in the form of a set of Restore disks or the operating system will be concealed on a hidden partition on your hard drive. I suggest you check your PC user manual for details of using the Recover disk/partition. You should be aware that a Repair should not necessarily delete any files or applications you installed after you purchased your pc. the whole object of a repair is to reinstall operating system files. However, it is wise to backup any important data just in case.

Using Recovery disks or files from Hidden partitions are, however, the exception to the rule. If you use the recovery disk or recovery Partition option your hard drive will have all of its data erased, so you will loose everything. Again backing up any data you need to keep is the best policy. After using the Recovery disk/Partition option you will also need to reinstall any software or updates you installed after your PC was purchased.

To Repair you operating system proceed as follows:

1/ Insert the Windows XP cd into your CD-ROM and Reboot your machine (You will need to make sure that your CD-ROM is set to be the first boot option in your PCs BIOS)

2/ At the Welcome To Set Up screen press Enter to start the Windows set Up

3/ Next accept the License Agreement

4/ Set Up will now search your PC for any copies of Windows

5/ When set up finds the copy of Windows XP already installed on your PC, select it from the list and then press 'R' to start the Repair process

Thank you Zorro for your detailed response. I had tried the "explorer.exe." option, however that did not work for me ( I saw that in an earlier thread). I was going to resort to a "repair" or even factory defaults, but I tried booting up in safe mode a couple of times more to see if I could find anything else to help resolve the problem.

The 1st time the driver list (not sure if that's what you call it) stopped at mup.sys, so I researched it and did not find anything that applied. I rebooted in safe mode and it stopped at IPVNmon.sys. Researching this helped a great deal. Apparently this is installed with some DSL software ..Visual IP Insight ( monitoring tool) installs the driver ipvnmon.sys (located c:windows\system32\drivers). I found this softwate on my pc and removed it however it did not solve the problem..but I persisted and changed my folder view options to allow system files and operating files to be shown. I found that even after the removal of IP Insight, the driver was still there. I renamed it ipvnmon.sys.xxx and VIOLA everything came back up.

This seems to be a known problem with Dell and Visual Networks provided a fix, but I could not find it. Don't know why it is still a problem as this has been an issue for at least a year!

This took me into the very early hours and I was exhausted. I am sorry that I did not post this find immediately so that Zorro did not have spend time on my problem.
I hope that this information will be of help to others.

Again thank you Zorro! And to this site...very useful!
