Thread: Windows Media Player & VLC player are not working properly

Hi,

Firstly - Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum. This is my first post here and i'm not really sure where the best place is.
Secondly - Thank you for helping me. I say this in advance as i realise you are helping me for nothing essentially.


My computer problem

I am having problems watching video programs on my pc. This realated to all file types (I think) but for the moment i'm going to discuss what happens when i play a .avi file.

In windows media player when i play a .avi file i get no sound
In VLC media player when i play a .avi file i get no picture & no sound. However sometimes just sound plays.

I realise I may have a problem with something called codecs but i have almost zero knowledge about what these are, where they are from, what they do, etc etc.

I was wondering if anyone could help me sort out this problem. Perhaps there is a reset to default i can use to make videos work. Or something i can download?

I do not really like downloading programs as i fear spyware so i'd only really like to download from trusted sites.
