    Unhappy Missing hal.dll file

    Hello Group,

My Windows XP machine (sony VAIO) came down with the flu. It told me that it was missing the NTRL file and wouldn't boot. I used my XP CD and copied the NTRL, NTDETECT.COM and restarted the PC booting from the HD. It now tells me its missing the hal.dll file. I went into the XP CD and tried copying the hal.dll file but it tells me that the file is not found. Can I download and burn the file into a CD and copy it to the HD? I tried doing the BOOTFIX but it tells me that the partition is not NTFS or something like that. I don't have a restore CD, if I had one, would that fix my problems.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate it.

    Unhappy Re: Missing hal.dll file

I downloaded the file on restoring Hal.dll from the Windows XP but nothing. I typed the command and got an "unable to expand" error message. I tried the command as indicated and received the message "Access Denied". I tried looking under the C directory for the System32 folder and couldn't find it. The only way I was able to copy the Hal.dll file was by writing the command as: expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\. I then booted my PC and got the message "Invalid Boot.ini file".

I hope this helps, my PC is still unresponsive. I originally bought my PC used which came with no restore cd. My PC is a Sony VAIO and I found that Sony has a restore CD that matches my system. The question is, would this solve my problem?

    Thanks in advance,
