Unhappy Help with starting up pc from sticking

Firstly I am a beginner and coming to the end of my tether.

When I turn on my pc the first screen to appear is the Packard Bell screen which sits there for what seems like 5 mins then it goes black and then the dos (boot up screen) I think, then you get the Windows loading screen for about 1 min and then the welcome screen. All in all its takes about 10-15 mins to fully load to the welcome screen.

This happened suddenly and I have no idea why. I have used ccleaner, ran antivirus, spyware and nothing has been found. Apart from that problem the pc is fine once it loads. Does anybody know what I can do to make it stop sitting on the "Packard Bell" screen for so long. It used to load straight up.

    Thanks in advance.

OK .. a couple of things you can try.

    (1) Depending upon when this started ... did you try a ystem Restore to a time prior to the slow boot problem?

    (2) Click "Start/Run" type in msconfig
ensure the "Start up selection" is set to "Normal start up"

Now click on the "Startup" button. This shows you all the programs that run when you start your computer. Look through the files You should be able to see you virus program (eg. Norton). or your service provider ( eg blueyonder). Leave these and uncheck the rest (If not sure just uncheck everything .. but stop you internet connection) ... Now reboot ... it should boot quickly. Now again open msconfig and enable the first on the startup list. Reboot. If the computer is still quick to boot. try the next and the next etc. Finally you should find the program cause the delay.

    (3) Download and install M/S Bootvis here:
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/S.../BootVis.shtml

Once installed use this guide to speed up booting and closing
    http://www.thecryptmag.com/Online/43/bootvis.html

Not sure about anything just ask and I will try to help (I to have a Packard Bell )

Hi thanks for the quick response. Yes I did do a system restore but no success.

I also clicked on that link for the BootVis but I could not see where to download. Everytime I clicked on the download button it just kept reloading the page.

I am also with blueyonder which is now Virgin Media. I would be so grateful if you could help me out with this as I see my last resort of having to reformat my pc using the restore disks. I dont want to do this as I have to back up all my stuff to CD and am not even sure how to do that.

    Thanks in advance again.

    Hi again.

Right system restore didn`t work and a problem downloading Bootzis

Did you try the Start/Run ... msconfig/startup button and disabling the start programs ?

If you did .. and it didn`t help!

    Go here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Download the program "hijackthis" install it to your desktop.

Click on the icon and select "Do a system scan and save the log file"

after a few seconds "Notepad" should open and show a lot of information.

Click you cursor at the first letter then drag it down to the very botton of the file then press "Ctrl and c" this copys the information.

Now contact me again through the forum and "Paste" that information into your reply. To paste Click Ctrl and v.

This will give me a lot of information about your computer and hopefully the solution.

Hi Ferret. Here is my Hijack Log as requested.

By the way I never had a problem downloading BootVis, I just could not work out on the page what to click to download it. I had the same problem with HijackThis but eventually got it to work after clicking lots of different things on the page you sent me to. Please remember I am not very knowledgeable on this so my pc is in your hands. Thanks again.

    Ok thanks for the log.
Now run hijackthis again (Scan) and on the first window that opens (Note the Notepad one)

Look for these files and chech the box at the left hand side

After you have ticked all the files boxes look for the button on hijackthis "Fixchecked" the program will then fix these errors.

One other file that has show up that I am a bit concerned with is this one

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Broadbandadvisor.exe] "C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband\advisor\Broadbandadvisor.exe" /AUTORUN
Safe It seems that the name of this program is the same as the name of the file. In the most cases this is the result of trojans. To be sure, you should check this file.

Just to check it out go to this website and run an online scan

Think you need IE for this site.

This is another link for downloading Bootvis

    Ferret

Thanks again for the help. I have fixed those things that you asked me to do in HijackThis. What do i do now? Am I supposed to post another HJT log?

No I will run the scan in a second but will that HJT fix make my pc load up quicker now? Was what we fixed the problem?

I ran the scan and 16 infections were found (they were all tracking cookies). I fixed those too.

Going to bed now and would be grateful if you could let me know what to do next.

Thanks again Ferret for your continued help.

Ok I downloaded BootVis and ran it bu not sure what I was supposed to be looking at. Anyway the pc is still hanging at the Packard Bell screen.

Is there anything that I can try?

    Thank again
