To remove a user password, go into User Accounts through Control Panel, Change Password; type in the current password, then leave the "new password" blank.

To get rid of a boot password is a bit more complicated.

Is your daughter the only username on the laptop at present and you want to get rid of the account completely? If so, you will want to create a username for yourself with administrative rights, then go in and delete her user account. However, when you do this, all her info will be lost.

Perhaps I am not understanding what it is you want to do.

My daughter has a laptop, she is the only user. But, when she first got it, she applied a password to the thing. Now she wants to remove it so it just opens onto her desktop straight away.

I see. Well, it's not recommended to be password-free on a laptop -- security, you know. But, if you boot into safe mode (tapping F8), you can access the Administrator Account, and delete the password in her user profile that way. Unless there was an administrator password set when the laptop was initialized, it should be clear.

But, it seems to me that she could just go into her user account and delete the password and it should be gone. However, she may still be required to click on her name to open the desktop. I'm sure there's a way around that, I just don't know it off the top of my head. I'll have a look later - I'm in the middle of a virus cleaning....LOL

I understand you can use Tweak UI to do this:

And here is a manual way to do it as well:
