    Default Re-installing Xp operating system

If I re-install the operating system will it just overwrite XP or can it alter/remove/ damage any saved files?

A clean install of XP will wipe everything from your harddrive .. so you need to save any important files/driver/Photos/emails etc etc prior to the clean install.

    See here :
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/12997...indows_xp.html

Perhaps you should think about a repair install of XP which may be better for you. It should not touch your personal documents, but you might still need to save (say) Graphic card drivers etc .. Read this:

Sorry ... I did answer your questions in my last reply about reinstalling XP.

However you do not say why you think you need to reinstall the OS, It is concidered as a last resort by most people.

Why not tell us the problems you have with the current install, there might be some simple fixes .. if not the use the last resort (reinstall)

The actual problem is with my elderly mother's computer who feels she may have to 'pay a man to look at it'. I had a look and it is intermittently freezing: on boot up and on other occasions including connecting to internet. When it does connect it won't access any web addresses and sits on the browser page. Norton can't access internet for updates, and windows won't action a Restore, and just sits on the last page without gathering info. I've reset connection, changed default browser and checked task manager to see if any application is using up the RAM (I had that problem when I upgraded Norton with SVCHOST ****ing the life out of it). I checked event viewer for the error but can't at present remember what it was (DCOM???)

If I could get it to restore back to a point before it started playing up (%.12.08) I reckon it would help.

    Cheers

Could YOU download Hijackthis, save it to a CD/DVD/Pendrive or something to transport it to you mums computer.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html

Once installed, open hijackthis and select "do system scan and save a log file" once Hijackthis is finished, notepad should open and show the result of the scan.

Copy and paste this result into your reply (Hilight the text .. press ctrl c to copy and ctrl v to paste)

I would also suggest to download this at the same time as you download hijackthis as it might be required later.

Downloaded them. If I pop round tonight I can drink all their port again at the same time as running it.

OK ... you will need to run Hijackthis again ... These are the entries reported bad or unknown. Read the log report carefully and decide if you want Hijackthis to repair the files. The log is not as bad as some I have seen but there is one BAD entry. Let me know what happens after fixing the files.

Took me several attempts to get it to boot up and stay up. When I eventually got in I uninstalled Norton as some of the error messages I was getting related to svchost and I've had problems with Symantec myself. Re-set Internet connections and when I left it was a lot better. Will follow your advise re hijack and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks V. much
