Registering Keycode Problems
I have a laptop here with a dead HDD. I installed a used HDD (which is failing with a reallocated sector count failure), just to see if anything else was wriong with this laptop before investing in a new HDD.
I got the OS installed after quite a fiddle, and tried to unlock XP, without success. I have the proper keycode, as it is printed on the Dell label on the bottom of the laptop. (This is an Inspiron 1000 from 2004.)
My question is, with this particular failure on the HDD, is it possible that the unlock XP failure is related? I mean, would the keycode/computer combination have difficulty generating the correct hash code to unlock with a failing HDD?
Thanks.

No, the xp code is not related to the PC as such, I assume you have XP installed and are trying to activate it..
What I do if when the activation fails, choose the option to activate over the phone and call microsofts free phone number, just follow the automated voice and you should be able to activate your xp copy.

Yes, I did manage to get XP installed on this failing HDD - I wanted to see what the exact failure was, make sure the rest of the laptop was operating properly and also get a system inventory. Thank you, I will try that - next weekend, after the new HDD arrives and I do a reinstall. For the automated voice prompts, will I need the owner's name, address, etc? Just want to be prepared - never had to do this before! LOL
Thanks.

No you dont know any personal details at all

Well, the automated system couldn't activate it, so I ended up talking to a real person. They got it sorted for me. Thanks again.
