    Default Winsock corrupt

I have an Acer netbook here. My instructions were, "I've uninstalled Charter Security Suite and I'd like you to put Comodo on it for me." Sounded easy enough - but wait - Comodo wouldn't install properly, then it wouldn't uninstall properly. I ran Ccleaner to get rid of Comodo & Charter, deleted all the leftover folders. Now it appears the Winsock is corrupted because I am connected to the internet, but I can not do anything - no pages load in IE, nothing will update for MBAM or SAS, and I can't get a response - the errors say it looks like the firewall is not permitting anything through. Well, I don't even have the XP firewall on at this point, and I still can't get anything. I tried the MS instructions to delete the registry keys and let XP reestablish the Winsock on bootup, but that's not working either. I tried System Restore, but that appears to have been turned off - why, I don't know - he wouldn't even know how to turn that off!

Any other ideas for me? I hate to have to format and reinstall- these netbooks don't have a CD/DVD; it's a real pain in the neck!

    Thanks.

WinSock XP Fix Freeware download and review - fix XP internet connectivity from SnapFiles

Winsockxpfix did the trick! Now if I can figure out what else is wrong with this thing.....LOL

Hi simrick. As with a lot of security apps, such as Norton and McAfee there is usually an uninstaller tool. Charter has one as normal add/remove can cause problems. Don't know how it was removed by your friend but this maybe for future reference; Charter High Speed Security Suite Re Installation - Charter Communications

As it's XP may I suggest installing version 2.4.18.184 of Comodo as it doesn't come with av; Download Comodo Firewall + Antivirus 3.9.95478.509 - FileHippo.com and is less intrusive and ideal for XP. (Wont work with Vista).
Used Comodo for quite some time now but think it's getting to be a tad bloated. For the last three months I've been running XP and Vista with Microsoft's own firewalls set to default, with a router firewall, and have not come to grief! Both PC's also start up faster.
AV is Avast Home, bought superantispyware and those are the only 'live' scanning programs I use. Will see how it goes but these 'firewalls' are overrated I think. Just my humble opinion of course. I have a few other programs for 'blocking' and manual scanning for malware. Anyway, good luck with repairing the machine...

HI Faber :- I have that version of Comodo running on a Vista machine with no problems (Vista Home Ultimate).

I have been using Comodo firewall & Virus for 2 years now on both XP & Vista, never had a Virus, in all that time.

Hello Ferret, always thought that Version 3 onwards would only run on Vista. Two years ago the first version 3 played havoc with Vista and only uninstalling Comodo through safe mode could I get my PC to work. Had that black background and a Microsoft warning that my copy of Vista was not genuine..etc. Caused a little err..exitment at the time.

Just to clear any confusion Comodo version 2.4.18.184 is down the list a bit.

Thanks guys. I guess the mistake I made was assuming he had really uninstalled Charter correctly.......learned that lesson the hard way! LOL Now that I have everything back in order and can set a restore point, I'm going to try the latest version of Comodo - I like the stateful file inspection it's touting. I'll let you know if I have any problems with it.

Interesting....I heard that the MS firewalls only work one-way - inbound - and so I've always recommended using Comodo or something else, even when behind a router with a firewall. I'd LOVE to get rid of software firewalls altogether - they really slow a computer down, you know? But this netbook goes all over the place, and who knows what networks it connets to, and it needs to be SAFE as possible! LOL

Oh my!! I hope I don't run in to that!!! I did find a manual uninstaller in the Comodo user help forum and had to use that to get things sorted on this machine.

The latest version of Comodo with Defence+ and AV is worse than a nagging mother-in-law!! Good luck with it and hope your friend appreciates it... Don't use another 'proper' AV while you use the full install of Comodo.
