    Default Clean install problem

    Hello guy's,

I have had to do a clean install of XP pro edition sp2 on a friends pc. The problem I have is that I can not see the onboard lan port in device manager.( MOBO is ABIT-NF8-v2)

I'm pretty sure this is a driver problem, but do not have the the system board driver disc! have tried looking on the web to no avail.

I have installed a wireless nic to download updates etc, but need this onboard port sorted for when I give it back. Other then that, the pc is running like a dream.

    Please help!!!

    Thanks in advance

When you run the Add Hardware Wizard, does the computer find anything? Even something that it does not recognise? Is there any "Unknown Device" showing in Device Manager? If it's not finding anything at all, [and you don't have the original system drivers backed up], I wonder if perhaps the on-board LAN has gone bad? You may need to install a PCI NIC in place of it.

These are the only drivers ABIT have available for this MB.

    Hi Simrick,

Thank you for getting back to me in regards to this problem. I tried what you suggested without success.

I think your correct in saying that I need to install a PCI NIC to get round this problem, so far it seems the only solution.

    Thanks again

Sorry to say I have seen this happen a million times - the on-board NICs are usually the first thing to go.....see if you can locate a freecycle group in your local area and post a wanted message for a PCI NIC - people have extra ones all over the place, and you can get one for free. freecycle.org Good luck!
