Default Typing is lagged - need to repair XP?

Okay you guys, I have been over in the majorgeeks malware forum getting a laptop cleaned that was horribly infected. [don't kill me - I still love you all the best!] Once it was all clear, they sent me over to the software forum to get help repairing it....it's got a typing lag that won't quit (slower than treacle), although I seem to have resolved all other problems.

For history, you can see the original cleaning here, and for the repair so far you can view the thread here .

I would be very grateful for some help on this one. I have had this thing for over 3 weeks now, and I'd really like to return it, but I can't if it's not running properly.

    Thanks!

Have you tried all the basics like clearing the registry, reducing the number of programs running in the background (msconfig) and defragging the hard drive?

Does the problem still exist in safe mode?

I would go through every ticked box in msconfig, then disable one and reboot. If the problem still persists, re-enable it and try another one. Keep going until you find the one causing the problem.

Yes, I have done all those things - you can see everything I've done here. I stopped every service from startup except required MS services. The typing lag does not manifest itself in safe mode. I'm thinking something was damaged by the viruses, or there's an IRQ conflict?

If it's not present in safe mode it could be that one of your drivers is at fault. Are they up to date?

Do you have a nvidia gfx card by any chance?

After a bit of googling, it appears some people have fixed similar problems by replacing the battery. Have you got a spare one you could test it with?

You know, I saw that too, a few days ago and wrote it off. But after you mentioned it here, I decided to give it a go. And, guess what? I am typing this right now with the battery removed, and NO LAG!!! Amazing!!! Thanks so much for your help! Cheers!

simrick , one other thing you can try, seeing as it's a power type of fault, is to remove the battery and AC power. Press and hold the on/off button for aprox 60 seconds. Replace battery and AC, reboot and see if the lag is still there.
