Error message when trying to export emails

After a stressful and expensive struggle I am finally managing to get Windows Vista to work for me, and I have decided the time is right to copy my email files from my old XP machine which is still running well. Ultimately I would like to get everything set up on my Vista machine (+ all the files backed up of course - bearing in mind my experience so far of that operating system), before gradually winding down my use of the older XP machine.

I have done this before so, going off my vague recollection, (now working on my XP machine), I went to the File menu, then I clicked Export, then Messages and a dialogue box popped up stating "This will Export messages from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange". I clicked OK and immediately another little box popped up stating "The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initialising MAPI". After clicking OK on that box I was left high and dry. (Nothing new there, then.)

Is there any way around this problem? I only want to transfer my email inbox and sent items to my Vista machine, where I can then, hopefully, import the files into Outlook Express' successor, Windows Mail.

With your help I've cracked the problem, but oh dear, what an epic struggle it has been once again. I had to alter the settings in Options, but it didn't work. The next suggestion was to reload Outlook, but to do that I had to uninstall Office altogether, then reload it. Once I'd got Outlook restored it still didn't help, so all that moither was for nothing.

Finally I tracked down the hidden file in the Registry which had all the Outlook Express folders, & copied them manually into Vista, where I used the Import Messages procedure in Windows Mail File menu.

All this moither makes me sceptical of Microsoft's claims to have produced an easier to use operating system.
