Try, control panel-performance and maintenance-admin tools-services and scroll down to windows audio and double click. If start up type shows automatic then change to manual and click apply and click ok. Re-open then change from manual back to automatic and again click apply and ok. Re-open again and under the recovery tab that all failures (3 of them) should have "take no action" in the dropdown menus. Close and reboot.
If that fails and no error showing in device manager try windows update under "custom" tab. Might give the correct drivers.
If that fails try a system restore to before the problem. To run system restore it is advisable to diconnect from the net, stop your firewall, AV and any running antispyware programs. Pick a date and try sys. restore. If that fails try another earlier date. Remember to restart your security programs, if needed, before going back on line.

1. Does the loudspeaker Icon appear in Taskbar ? If Yes
click and open Volume Control.
What is the mixer Device appearing for playback and Recording ?
2. If NO to above
start/ All programs/ accessories/System Tools/System Information.
Go down the menu and click Problem Devices.
If Sound Card listed proceed . to remedy as, suggested above.
3. By the way Belarc : list any sound device/card ? details please.

Also, you say the pc is about a year old. Has it ever worked? If so, when was the last time it worked? What has changed between now and then?

Whether you have audio devices in your computer can be checked in different ways.
Option 1 : As explained earlier LS icon in Taskbar.
Option2 : Start.All programs/accessories/system tool/system info
sound devices and or problem Devices.
Option3 : Start Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Sound and audio devices.
Option4 : Belarc list as mentioned earlier.
Option 5 : Start My computer/ C:/program files/DirectX/dxdiag sound.

Option6:Unknown devices :http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html
Option 7 In some other forum this download suggested for Foxconn.

Yes! some progress. I think you would have got manufacturer's details from the program unknown devices.or Belarc. Anyway the above entry shows there is some audio
device in your system ( great combination/s!).

Did you see the problem devices list / or the Device Manager ?

Option 1 : Can you connect any audio output from say TV or Cd player etc and connect it to LIne 1 ( probably in the back of the computer) and test your computer? ( Normally LINE/MIC/ LS sockets will be available in the back if there is a sound card inside the computer)
OR
connect from Line 1 ( assuming output point)( Insert an audio cd in The CD/dvd drive) to any other external audio system ?
Option 2 : Any provision for connecting external speakers to the computer ?

Option3 : No harm in downloading the Realtek drivers. You can delete if not required. When you try to install, the program will check up for compatible Realtek audio devices like ac97 etc and installation will be aborted if no device is found )

Para Two: 1.You seem to have only a dialup modem. Can you find the model details? This card also may have sound option/s) do you connect ?
2. Windows Media Player/ or Real Player: installed software in computer ?

I will be downloading the Everest program later in the night .
The motherboard has three PCI slots and I think has a built in sound card.
Foxconn 661M03-G (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN, IEEE-1394)
http://driveragent.com/scanorsearch.php?fn=audio
if no audio device detected.
Can you buy a seperate sound card and try ?

Am I trying "To carry coal to NewCastle " ????

1410 GMT Update:Google search Foxconn 661Mo3-G motherboard details
Identical problem and suggested solution realtek audio to be downloaded.

QUOTE Usually all I do at that point is tell it to install anyway. But if you didn't install the motherboard driver package first the sound usually fails.
