Default The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not computer literate, so please help me in laymans terms.I am trying to add a scanner ( Mutek 1200 ub plus) to my system, but when I play the driver disk, the following message appears.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.
Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

The same kind of thing happens on some other cd's that I try to play, which have previously been ok.
My system runs on Windows XP Home and the scanner instructions say that it is compatible with this system.

Please help!

Hi, welcome to the forums

Your problem is usually to do with a corrupt file, here are a number of solutions which should help your problem.

SOLUTION 1
You need to re-install these files from your ORIGINAL Windows XP CD-ROM. To do this:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:

Quote:
expand CD-ROM "Drive Letter":\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand CD-ROM "Drive Letter":\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand CD-ROM "Drive Letter":\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

5. Restart you PC and try installing and running the game again.

SOLUTION 2
Go to the C:\Windows\Repair folder and copy the autoexec.nt file from there to the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

SOLUTION 3
download and run the following file http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/xp_fix.exe

Please note i have not tried this file myself so i dont know how well it work or any problems with it, my advice before trying any of the above is to create a restore point in case you run into any problems.

Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

Thanks

I am selling my umax astraslim se scanner, not all that old. Reason? It won't run in vista even though it recognised and installed software. I contacted Umax who said we ain't doing no vista drivers!! Their loss, changed to Hewlett Packard.
